Welcome Back Toland Way Families

Dear Toland Way Families,

On behalf of our entire staff, I want to extend a warm welcome to our new families and welcome back those families that are returning.  I hope that you have been enjoying your much needed summer vacation and were able to rest, rejuvenate, and reconnect with your loved ones.

Toland Way functions as a community of teachers, parents, and staff to support all students. We value your voice, ideas, and collaboration in order to fulfill the educational, social, and emotional needs of all students and families.  By supporting one another, we can produce the best education for every child in a safe, nurturing environment. Your children are our top priority and we strive to provide them with a high-quality, well-rounded educational experience.

The First day of school is Monday, August 15, 2022

I will be holding a Meet and a Greet for all parents/guardians and students on Wednesday, August 10, 2022 at 5:00pm in the auditorium.  I look forward to meeting each and every one of you there.

In preparation for the new school year, please review and follow the below protocols to help ensure the safest possible learning environment for all of our students and staff:

    • MASKING: Masking is strongly recommended.  We will have surgical masks available for distribution upon request.
    • VACCINATION: All district employees are already vaccinated.  We encourage all eligible students to be vaccinated as well.
  • TESTING: We strongly encourage you to visit the campus this week to pick up a free rapid antigen test, and to test your child within 48 hours of the first day of school.
    • If your child tests negative, no action is needed.
    • If your child tests POSITIVE, Please do not bring your child to school.
      • Instead, keep your child at home,
      • Contact your child’s doctor to make a plan for care, and
      • Upload the POSITIVE test result to dailypass.lausd.net as soon as possible.
  • DAILY PASS: The Daily Pass will continue to be used to upload COVID-19 rapid antigen test results and vaccination records, monitor positive cases and to notify close contacts of a person who has tested positive. Students do not need to generate a Daily Pass QR code to enter school campuses.

DAILY SCHEDULE:

  • Instruction begins at 8:18am
  • Instruction ends at 2:45pm
  • Each Tuesday between August 16, 2022 to June 13, 2023 school will dismiss at 1:45pm as we continue to implement the LAUSD policy called “Banked Time/Professional Development.” This policy was established to give teachers time for staff training, professional development and grade level planning.

ARRIVAL:

  • Our front gate (next to the Main Office) and playground will open at 7:45am.  For safety reasons, students who arrive before 7:45am need to be accompanied by an adult outside of the school gate until the gate is opened by a staff member.
  • Drop-off valet is available at 7:45am, right in front of the office. Please stay within the cones. Do NOT drop your child on the opposite side of the street. Please do not make U-turns in front of the school.
  • Parents will be able to come onto campus to wait with their children on the upper yard.
  • Students will wait in their assigned area until the 8:14 bell rings at which time they will line up and wait for their teacher to pick them up.
  • When the first bell rings at 8:14am, parents are asked to say their goodbyes and begin to make their way to the upper yard side gate (the main gate will be closed when the first bell rings and students will only be allowed to enter the campus through the Main Office).
  • Parents will not be allowed to walk their child to class or follow the class to the classroom.
  • When the instructional day bell rings at 8:18am, the campus will be closed and all parents must be off campus at that time.
  • BIC (Breakfast in the Classroom) will be made available for all students who want to eat in the morning.
  • If you are volunteering, you must return to the Main Office, through the main entrance to sign in and receive your District provided Volunteer Badge.
  • If you need to speak with your child’s teacher, please make an appointment through email, parent portal, or you may call the main office to leave a message for the teacher.
    • Speaking to your child’s teacher before the bell rings is difficult because your child’s teacher is preparing to begin the class instruction at that time.
  • Students arriving after 8:18am will be considered tardy.  Please help us by making sure your child arrives on time.
  • Students who arrive on the school bus will be able to enter from Ave 46.  A staff member will be there to receive your child.

DISMISSAL:

  • 2nd to 6th grade students will dismiss at 2:45pm (1:45pm on Tuesday) from the Main Yard.
  • UTK, TK, Kinder and 1st grade students will dismiss at 2:45pm (1:45pm on Tuesday) from the lower yard located on Ave 47.
  • The main gate will open when the dismissal bell rings.  Parents will proceed to the main yard to pick up their child and exit through the main gate.
  • To ensure the safety of our students who stay in the After-School Programs (LA’s Best & Extended Youth Services-EYS), we are asking that parents please exit the campus as soon as possible, as gates will be locked for our students’ safety.
  • Beyond the Bell is offering 2 programs for our students. 1) LA’s BEST is for grades TK (5 years and older) - 6th.  They offer the opportunity to help with homework and to participate in enrichment activities. For more information, please contact them at (323) 333-4903.  You may also submit your application via online at www.lasbest.org.  You must wait for enrollment confirmation before leaving your child after school.  2) YS is for grades 2nd - 6th and also offers time for homework completion and participation in sports.  Both programs require enrollments, hard copies may be picked up in the main office.

We will also have opportunities to get parents involved at Toland Way.  If you would like to volunteer, you will need to complete the volunteer application found at: https://achieve.lausd.net/Page/10443

Lastly, please consider joining our PTA and supporting their efforts to continue to work in partnership for the success of all students.
